Lou Chen '19, Founder and Director
Originally from San Bernardino, CA, Lou Chen is a 2019 graduate of Princeton University, where he received his bachelor's degree (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) in Music with Certificates in Conducting Performance and American Studies. For his work with TYO, he has received the Santos-Dumont Prize for Innovation and the A. James Fisher, Jr. Memorial Award. In January 2019, he was invited by Princeton University Concerts to participate in a public panel discussion on El Sistema alongside Maestro Gustavo Dudamel and Anne Fitzgibbon of the Harmony Program.
In addition to directing TYO, Lou is the new Program Manager for Arts Outreach at Princeton University. While an undergraduate, he served as Associate Conductor of the Princeton University Sinfonia, Outreach Director of the Princeton Chamber Music Society, and Director of the TCHS-Princeton University Collaborative Concert Series. He has conducted ensembles ranging from the Princeton University Orchestra to pit orchestras for the Princeton University Players. While studying abroad at the University of Oxford, he performed in the Hertford College Orchestra and the Crisis Skylight Oxford Band. He has also premiered works by student and faculty composers. Lou previously studied piano with Nadene Burke and Rae Kate Shen, and conducting with Dr. Ruth Ochs.
